$1 Million in Google AdSense Earnings

They are calling him the million dollar man. Jason Calacanis recently revealed in his blog that he is on track to earn a million dollars from AdSense over the year ahead.

And if that number doesn’t wake you up and have you sitting on the edge of your seat, consider for a moment that he reached this level in less than a year. His company only started using AdSense in September 2004.

Calacanis runs Weblogs Inc., a network dedicated to creating trade weblogs across niche industries. And he’s quickly proven that AdSense is a credible advertising partner.

As their network has grown, so has their AdSense revenue. In January 2005 they earned an average of $580 per day. In March it was $737. In May it was $1,585. One day in July, just before he made the blog entry referred to above, they earned $2,335. Remember that is just for one day. If they can take that daily average to $2,740 they’ll be earning a rate of $1 million for a year. And Calacanis predicts that reaching daily earnings of $3,000 or even $5,000 is quite achievable.

That’s quite an achievement. Keep in mind that Calacanis has 103 bloggers on the payroll and nine staffers. Even so, many webmasters would give an arm or a leg to have even a third of that.

Google’s AdSense has been revolutionary. It has become firmly established as the darling of the online advertising industry. Although rumors are heard of major competitors launching a similar service, AdSense’s premier position seems secure for now.

In essence, AdSense has made it possible for almost anyone with a web site or blog to earn some revenue from advertising, without having to employ sales people or spend precious time searching for advertisers.

AdSense works like this. Webmasters sign up for an account in just a few minutes. They receive a small snippet of code to include on their web pages. Google will then automatically serve advertisements that are relevant to the content on the webmaster's pages. When someone visits the webmaster's site and clicks on one of Google's AdSense advertisements, the webmaster earns a fee. Advertisers can pay anywhere from five cents to a hundred dollars per click, and the webmaster receives a percentage of that fee.

Many webmasters are content with earning five to ten dollars from AdSense to cover the cost of web hosting. But many, unsurprising, have higher ambitions. At a popular WebmasterWorld forum, participants share tips and encouragement on reaching a goal of $300 per day from AdSense. So it is no wonder that Calacanis created quite a buzz when he made his million dollar blog entry.

Google have proven once again that they excel at designing innovative Internet services. If you are in the web industry and have not yet used AdSense, then perhaps you should try it out. Google Page Rank Explained

One of the criteria used by Google when displaying search results is the Page Rank (PR). The higher the PR, the higher a page will be shown in search results. In this article we explain how Google calculates he PR and how you can optimize your website for achieving a high PR. Google also uses factors like relevance for the search - this is not discussed in this article.

This article is based mainly on an original article by Google founders Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page but also on hearsay, speculation and rumours. Google is not interested in allowing the public to know exactly how the PR is calculated since it is then easier to trick or cheat the search engine and since this would undermine its credibility. It does however appear that a variation over the basic formula is still used.

Google assigns a PR of between 0 and 10 to all pages which it indexes. It is possible to install a Google toolbar which shows the PR when you visit a page. The toolbar can be downloaded from http://toolbar.google.com/.

In reality, the PR is a value between 0 and "very large number". Algorithmic scale is most likely used to translate the value into the PR we know. A logarithmic scale works so values may be translated as follows:

Values 0.1 to 1 results in PR 0
Values 1 to 10 results in PR 1
Values 10 to 100 results in PR 2
Values 100 to 1000 results in PR 3 etc

What we'll look at in this article is how the value is determined. The actually scale used is not important to understand the concepts and it is not known to the public. It is likely that the scale is changed regularly.

Before looking at the actual formula - which may seem a bit scary - we'll discuss the basic idea by which the founders of Google wished to set importance - expressed in PR - to webpages.

The basic idea is that a link from a page A to a page B indicates that page A casts a ï¿½vote' for page B. The link from page A to B indicates that page B has something important on it which means that page A endorses page B. The basic idea of Google PR is that the more votes a page have, the higher the PR it should get. There are however different weights assigned to the votes cast. A vote from a page with a low PR is less important than a vote from a page with a high PR and therefore has less weight. If a page A casts many votes to many pages by having links to a number of pages, then the vote of page A is divided into small parts and each part is then assigned as a vote to each of the pages which page A links to. As you may have deduced from this explanation, the PR then expresses - to some extent - the likelihood that someone surfing randomly on the web will end up on the given page. A probability is therefore expressed in the PR.

Before looking at how this works out, we'll look at the exact formula used. You need not understand the formula as long as you understand the basic idea, but we will add it here for completeness. We'll look at what the basic idea and what the formula means in terms of getting a high PR a bit further down.

The basic formula is the following, where A is the page we wish to find the PR for and pages T1 to Tn are the pages linking to page A:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + PR(T2)/C(T2) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

Where:
1) PR(A) means the PR of page A. Subsequently, PR(T1) means the PR of page T1
2) C(T1) is the number (count) of links going out of page T1.
3) PR(T1)/C(T1) - it follows from 1) and 2) that this is the page rank of the page T1 divided by the number of outgoing links from page T1. In other words, PR(T1)/C(T1) expresses the part of the vote of page T1 that is awarded to page A.
4) d is a damping factor which is probably set to around 0.80 to 0.85. We will not look into details as to why this factor is needed, but just state here that it has to do with probability distribution.

You may want to make a few examples and you'll see how it works out.

If you are bright, you may have noticed that you need to know the PR for all the pages linking to page A in order to work out the PR for page A. This may however not be possible as some of the pages are new and were never indexed before by Google. For this reason, Google assigns an initial value to all pages and after a few iterations where the PR is recalculated, an appropriate value is determined.

From the description of the basic idea and the formula we are now able to look at the factors which result in a high PR and thus give guidelines for achieving this.

The more webpages linking to your website the more votes will be cast upon your website, so the higher PR you will get. Links from pages which a high PR and with few outgoing links count higher than other links. How to achieve this is the subject of many articles on their own and we will not dwell into this further here.

If you have links to external sites from a page A on your own site, then you will be casting your vote to other sites. If however you also have links from page A to your own other pages, then you will be sharing the vote for page A with external sites and your own pages. This way, you will keep part of your own vote within your own site. For this reason, it is recommended that you link from each of your webpages to your main page or even link from each page to all your other pages.

Note that Google may penalize a website which tries to achieve a higher PR by what Google considers an inappropriate means. If for example you purchase links from a link exchange provider, Google may see this as a form of spamming and reduce your PR as a result. Playing fair seems to be safer than trying to "cheat"

Many people often wonder how to make money on the internet. Simply doing a search in Google for "Making Money on the Internet" will bring up millions of results offering to make you rich with little to no effort. In this article, I will be discussing how to make money using the Amazon.com Associate's program. This program is a large affiliate network that allows you to make a percentage of sales that you generate through Amazon's website. The best part about it is that it does not require you to ship, take orders, or anything else for that matter. All you have to do is get a customer to go through one of your links and make a purchase at Amazon. It may sound easy, but it does requite some effort to get people to your site, and more importantly, to click an Amazon link and purchase something.

The hardest part of all is having a blog or website than generates traffic, especially traffic relating to your category or niche. If you already have this, you are one step closer to generating some money from the internet. The Amazon.com Associates program had a lot of tools once you setup an account and log in. The most important tools are the link creator and the "Astore" features.

The generate links feature allows you to create image links, text links, or a combination of the two. All you have to do is simply select a product and then Amazon will generate the HTML code to paste in a blog entry or on your website. An example of a image and text link can be seen here. Notice the MacBook picture and link box embedded in my review. This is a simple way to allow readers to view the product and give them a chance to purchase it. Not to mention, a 6% commission on a notebook computer is not bad at all. Sell a couple a month and you are on your way.

The other option to sell products through Amazon is by using an Astore. This is my personal favorite because it allows you to go through a step by step tutorial to build your store. You can add product categories and name the store anything you like. You can also change the color and settings to closely resemble the rest of your website or blog. The Astore allows you to add individual products from Amazon.com, as well as whole categories such as computers, books, etc. Once the store is setup, you can leave it on its own page, or imbed it into an existing page using iframes. All of the code is generated automatically by Amazon which makes it a breeze. My personal Astore can be seen by clicking here . Notice it is not exactly like the rest of my site, but overall it matches very well.

I hope this article helps you see the possibilities Amazon.com's Affiliate program can offer. I personally use this program on my own site which was referenced above and I make a good amount of money on the side. Search Engine Optimization - 4 Basic Rules for Quality SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is considered by many to be a subset of search engine marketing, a term used to describe a process of improving the volume of traffic to a web site from search engines usually through search results. Search Engine Optimization has been the focus of a field of marketing research wherein methods have been explored to provide a user's site with a higher ranking on search engines. In a broad sense, SEO is marketing by understanding what Internet visitors might search for, to help them with sites offering what they are interested in finding. It doesn't have to be complicated. The key thing is to remember that each and every page of your web site is a unique entity and has to be treated appropriately for search engine optimization.

Here are four basic rules that can guide you:

1. Use keywords with one's web page titles. In the Internet language, keywords are words used to find useful results in while searching. Think and plan of the best descriptive keywords for your webpage titles. Many web site owners use inappropriate names or their company name in the page titles. Yet, it might s not be the best way people search. Each page should have the keywords for that page appropriately.

2. Get the keywords right. Make sure you've selected words that meet your marketing criteria and needs. Choosing words that are too general will only result in being one of millions so be more specific with your words. The more specific they are, the more it will result in higher rankings. Ensure however, that the words you choose are usable. Example: 'kakoru puzzles' and 'kakoru games' have two completely different rankings; 'search engine optimization' and 'search engine optimizers' do too. Even 'writers' and 'writing' can have varied rankings.

3. Use keywords in your title tag, and meta tags. A tag references to the semantic structures delimiting the start and end of an element or elements in the HTML code. Meta elements provide the information about a given web page, and most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are inserted into the HTML code, but are not visible to a user looking at the site. For each web page, be sure to include the appropriate keywords in the all the page tags. Make the description as interesting and stimulating as possible including the keywords. Many search engines actually use the meta description as the citation displayed on a search!

4. Use the keywords in your contents. Make sure that the content of each web page contains relevant citations to your keywords. This is important. However, be warned not to overdo them either. Too much of them and your webpage will get discounted by the search engines.

And yes, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) does work! I have seen my own web pages progress from virtually nonexistent ranking to a soaring one. Perhaps not to the top as yet, but still the effect is tremendous, and in a positive way.

Offline Vs. Online Marketing : Have the Winds of Marketing Changed?

As I ponder this question, as I am sure you are too, there are many thoughts that whip around in our minds. Students of marketing are no longer only being taught the standard marketing strategy. The shift to online marketing has gained such strength that those that had never considered the Internet a viable choice are now including it as an important part of all their marketing efforts. One of the reasons for that shift is the vast amount of monies that are saved on printing costs vs. online set up fees.

In the past business owners had no choice but to pay out the hefty fees necessary to print hundreds of copies for their ad runs only to find that the ad campaign failed or had at most a small response rate. If they were tracking the response then they had to go back to the board and create a new ad campaign and print and mail that doubling their initial investment. On the contrary, once the website has been created the expense of changing the look or feel of your campaign is minor.

Both online and offline the length of time that it takes a browser to become a buyer may not be much different. But how do you turn a browser into a buyer? As marketing professionals and students alike know very well, it takes seven to ten contacts with a customer before they become the sought after buyer. Familiarity is the key. You have to build trust and that only comes with time. After the sale that trust must continue to increase or the new buyer may not come back and certainly won't refer their friends and family to you. However, I am getting ahead of myself. We'll save this discussion for another time.

Some of you may think that your business is different. You don't have a product that would benefit from an online presence. Perhaps you think that traditional marketing is the only way to go. I would like to offer an example if you will indulge me. Let's say you own a bakery. We'll call it My Little Taste of Italy. You are located in a small town in southern California and have a loyal, local, customer base. As you sell perishable goods how can you possibly benefit from an internet presence? I will now show you just how viable the internet is for a business such as this.

Our first step is to put together a web presence. This will take some marketing dollars that you may feel are better spent in the local market but realize we are now talking global marketing. As you know very well, as your market area increases so does your potential customer base. When putting together your website you will need to optimize your web presence with every available means. So what you need to consider are not only your keyword density but what keywords you should use. This is done by checking out the competition. Look at the words like, bakery, Italy, Italian, and perhaps some of your product line biscotti, rosettes, cakes, cookies, muffins, brownies, and any combination of those words. After checking out the competition you will know whether you should continue to use these as your keywords or look for more specific ones.

Once your site is complete and your online presence is there you need to begin your marketing efforts. One thing that you should do is to link the offline with the online markets. Perhaps you can send a custom postcard to make your offline market aware of the convenience of online ordering. Continuing to mix the two marketing arenas is always a wise investment. As I have heard it said many times before, putting all your eggs in one basket is asking for trouble.

You are your best salesman, let others know you are there and if your product is as good as you believe it is your customers will come back again and again.

Let's see what else they do to further promote their goodies? One idea they might try is adding a little something extra in outgoing packages. Why would they spend hard earned income giving away goods for free? If they truly have the best products around, then giving out samples can only increase the chance of customers trying something different in their next order. The more they try the more they will buy. That is why samples have been such a profitable investment in any business effort over the years.

Another point I would like to make here is presentation is priceless. No matter how good your product is you want to wow your customers. Make sure when your customers receive their packages they are satiated with all of their senses. Remember the eye is the window to the soul and the presentation is as important as the offering. For this reason the bakery we have chosen as our example, My Little Taste of Italy, packages with care each and every outgoing shipment.

Now you have your product and packaging, your web presence and a few customers. Let's see what we can do to increase the customer base. Article marketing has been proven to be an effective tool. Use the media, whether offline or on to grow your business. Be sure the information is such that the media will even care. A holiday is a good time to send out an article or press release to announce an event, new product, or business expansion that you are promoting. Again we turn to the bakery. One thing that My Little Taste of Italy could do is put together care packages for the soldiers stationed overseas. That would be a good idea for promoting their business while serving the community. The media loves the holiday angle. Additionally the indie musician is not stuck with the costs of making an entire CD. They can make a single and post it on the Internet, gaining huge success from one song.

With a little know how and marketing sensibility any upstart musician or experienced musical act can now achieve success, great success in fact on their own. Recently, while a guest on the Sirius Satellite Radio Show The Good Life, I spoke with the host who told me that his two teenage boys get most of their music off the Internet and never listen to regular radio anymore.

Why? Because they can obtain music from acts they wouldn't be allowed to listen to on traditional radio. They're tired of the same old bands and singers being played over and over again. "Most don't have any talent, they're just showpieces." This isn't the first or the last time I've heard that statement from teenagers and adults alike.

For the indie artist who wants to reach a broader market (and you must have a good product) and receive more exposure for their product on the Internet, the first thing you need to do is market, guerrilla market and then market some more. How do you do that? There are many ways that I mention in my book, The Indie Guide to Music, Marketing and Money but here are a few simple suggestions:

•Join music boards and start in on the discussion. At the end of each of your posts make sure to put who you are and your website. Add something to the conversation, don't spam. Write helpful hints and post them on the boards, etc. If the boards don't allow tags but they do allow you to post your email address, make sure it's something with your website at the end. Have a real email address but DON'T use your main email because it will be spammed.

•Start networking at local musician meetings and songwriter / artists forums in your region. You can find them on the Internet. These meetings host artists such as yourself who get together on a regular basis to discuss the music scene and present their latest creations. It's also a wonderful place to get the pulse on gigs you can join in on and new marketing ideas.

•You know all that annoying spam snail mail you receive with pre-paid postage envelopes inside? Why not save the envelopes and put a little note inside that states since they were kind enough to share their information with you, you're returning the favor. Also, with any bill or any correspondence you send out that's official, include a one sheet or little card that has a blurb about you and your music (watch the weight; you don't want to add more postage). Make sure to put your website on whatever material you have.

•Start your own podcast and post it on all the podcast sites.

•Why not send your music to different podcasts. Ask permission first. Send them to your site where they can hear a sample or two and if they are receptive to playing your music on their podcast, send it along. If they use your music in their podcast you may have gained new fans and sold more CDs.

The most important thing you can do is to play live. Go to Wal-Mart, Starbucks and other local shops and ask if you can put on a free concert there. Anywhere and any place that will let you play, do! Make sure to have a sign up sheet where people can sign up for your newsletter. Then create a newsletter and send it out once a month at the most. Sure, there are infinite methods of getting someone to pay you money online, but when you boil it all down there are only three different, wholly original ways to make money online. The three root business models.

First of all, you can sell something online. It could be a service or a product, perhaps even a non-physical token representing hope. Selling businesses and Franchises fall into this category, as does anything else at all that could be owned personally.

This business model goes back to the days when commerce was invented. Cavemen used this business model and it didn't change very much when adapted to the internet.

If you have any possible form of content online, you can simply rent out the Ad Space beside it. It is still very big business in the offline world, but with the invention of the Google AdSense program in 2003, the online format got a major popularity boost and today there are few websites NOT employing this tactic in some form. Even our daily eMails have been invaded by this business model, and before too long someone will figure out how to include advertisements along with everything else we say, including the spoken word.

It is interesting to note that business models 1 and 2 do not play nicely together on the same website. For instance, if you have a web page that sells something for $29.95, offering AdSense ads on the same page is probably not a good idea because some potential buyers might see the ads and exit your site through one of them before you make your sale. So instead of getting $29.95, you wind up with a small amount like 6 cents, or sometimes nothing at all because too many choices can scare people away.

Finally, the latest contender to these ancient business models is affiliating. To sell for others and earn a commission. This can be done many ways online to earn a living, across a broad spectrum of appearance. For instance, you might develop a whole website based on selling one particular product, or even multiple such websites for the same product, each targeting different keywords.

On the far side of the spectrum, there is a very easy technique that most of the Internet Marketing community seems to thrive on. They simply post as many small Advertisments, email Ads, Blog, and even forum postings out there that they can with their affiliate links, sometimes using multiple affiliate links at the same time.

This business model can compliment either the first or third business models just fine. That's because it falls right in-between the other two on the monetary spectrum. Placing AdSense Ads along with affiliate links on a website is ok, as no matter what they click, you make money. Meanwhile, placing a few well-selected affiliate links on a sales website won't destroy your sales, it might in fact compliment them because you have such control over which products you affiliate for.

There are simply no other ways to make money online, and probably offline either that don't fit into these definitions. You've simply got to choose which one fits your mindset and resources the best.

Choosing which one is the overall best business model, however, is not practical. A set amount of effort can produce the same income from each. Let's look at this in another format:

Affiliate sell for a living = Dozens of sales x medium money

Place Ads for a living = Millions of "views" x tiny money

They are all three directly proportional to the amount of work you put in. Even within the realm of Affiliating, if you make a single website that spends 10 pages preparing visitors to click an affiliate link, you should have roughly 10 times the success as a single page doing the same job... In the end you get paid X amount for the proportional amount of work you put in.

Making money online is just a dream for many, but it doesn't have to be. There are several legitimate sources of income online, but finding them can often prove difficult, as there are many work at home scams out there. Blogging for money can be a lucrative occupation if you work hard at it. As with many jobs, the top %5 make %95 of the money. The difference is- when you're a blogger, you're your own boss. You can also get inbound links to your blog/site by doing what is called link baiting. You either write a controversial post (about another blogger, maybe?) then tell them about it... or review a product, then tell the manufacturer of the product about it. If the scheme works, you will get at least the manufacturer/author to link to your blog. If you're lucky, several sites will link to your article.

You can also submit your URL to a linkdump or similar web directory. Blog carnivals are becoming a popular way to promote your blog as well.

Then there's paid search engine optimization, or SEO. Basically, you pay a company to generate links to your blog. They usually pay other site/blogs to link to your site/blog. I don't know a ton about SEO, so I assume there's more to it than that.

Regardless of how you promote your blog, don't expect results overnight, as Google only updates PR every so often. I've found that it takes about 3 months to see a movement in a site's PR.

Building your readership/traffic means the onus is on you! You've got to produce quality content that makes people want to come back to your blog for more. I really can't help you with that one. I have noticed that writing more posts seems to generate more traffic.

One last nugget of wisdom before I start the next part of this article- link to your sources! Be sure to link to any source you use for videos, ideas, etc... the authors may notice and link back to you, or even ask you to be a guest blogger. They will usually let you link to your blog in articles that you write for them, meaning you get a nice PR and traffic boost!

Step 3: Finding Advertisers

It is truly amazing to me how many scams there are out there when it comes to making money online. I mean it's hard enough to get by especially when you are short on cash. But then to top it off there are these companies and people who want you to work for them, and they make it sound like you will make money, but then it turns out that you end up nothing or you are out money.

Here are my top four worst ways to make money online.

1. Get paid to surf-the-net. Oh, this is a good one, and I mean that very sarcastically. It is very difficult to make any amount of money that is going to matter using this method. Also, typically you have to download some software that can be used with your regular browser or use their browser. And, the only real way to make money is if you have a lot of referrals under you, kind of like a pyramid scheme. So you're supposed to hassle your friends and family to sign up too, and they are supposed to do the same. You'll be lucky to earn $20 a month going this route. Also you will not get paid until you reach a certain amount, which if it is $20+ can take a long time to earn. It just isn't feasible as a way to make money online.

2. Get paid to read e-mail. This is not like what it sounds, that you can read your own e-mail and get paid to do so. Instead they want your e-mail address so they can send you e-mail advertisements better known as SPAM. In order to get paid you have to read the e-mail, go to the link, and even in some cases sign up for offers, so you can be charged when you forget to cancel before the due date. Again, the real thing here is they want you to sign up for these offers, because they get a percentage of what you pay if you don't cancel them in time. They aren't in it to make you money, they are in it to make themselves money.

3. Get paid to fill out surveys. This offer can be a tricky one. There are paid survey sites, meaning you pay them a fee to get a list of places that pay a lot of money if you fill out their surveys supposedly, and then there are the free sites such as Greenfield. I used to fill out surveys at Greenfield as an example. However, I discovered over time that there was less cash involved, and more things like an entry into a contest if I completed a survey for example. Or the survey took me 30 minutes to complete and was only worth a dollar. Then you only got the money once you'd accumulated $25 or $30. Again it is not worth your time to do this.

4. Online data entry jobs. This is one of the worst scams around because they want you to lay down $49.95 for their "package" before you can even get started making money online. Hello! You want to make money, not spend it. I see these ads for online data entry jobs all the time and even get the spam in my e-mail box. The only way to make money using these programs is to scam other people, by getting them to buy the program from you! Never pay money to make money, it is always a scam!

None of these so-called "money mines" will make you money. In the end they are scams which are trying to get you to make them money. That's right, in the end you get zilch, nada, zip. What do they get? The answer is easy, your time, your referrals, your service filling out forms or whatever, the money they get when you sign up for an offer, and the list goes on. Bypass these scams all together, and always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You'd do better to sign up for Associated Content and write articles. You know you will be paid well for your time, make new friends, and learn something new as well!

Thanks to the internet, the world is now literally at our fingertips. All before noon and all while still in your pajamas. It is an age like no other, and investing is no exception to this rule. If you can manage the Google search engine, there is a plethora of online websites that can teach you whatever you might wish to know about investing and managing money. The internet is the world's largest library with virtually an unlimited amount of resources on investing and money management and is available right from the comfort of your own home.

While I have no illusions that I have managed to gather every site out there, I have tried to compile a list here of some of the sites out there on the subject to give you an idea of what's available and tips on further places to look for more information.

www.escapefromknab.com is a website aimed at middle school children (though I enjoyed it too!) that teaches about money management through a series of interactive adventures. Similar to the old choose-your-own-adventure novels, the adventurer firsts blasts off to the Planet Knab. Once on Knab, your first task is to find a job. Decision making skills are introduced here as you are allowed to choose from a job that starts at a higher wage of $18 an hour but is known to be slow about giving raises versus another job that starts at $12 an hour but is quicker to reward a good worker with a raise.

I had to test it so I first went with the higher wage. I was then asked to fill out a simple form called the W-4 and could take deductions to have less taxes withheld. I was then shown my gross income and my monthly expenses on the next page and given some choices on how I could reduce them and what that would mean though in terms of my job and convenience. I then went through purchasing a home, choosing a car, investing, and at the end had succeeded in my mission of earning enough money to return to my home planet so apparently I invested wisely. (Now if only I showed that common sense and frugality on this planet!) However, this really is an excellent site. Simple to navigate and truly educates children while keeping it as a fun game so it maintains their interest. I would recommend it to anyone with children between the ages of 5 and 16 since teenagers can certainly benefit from it as well. I may even be returning soon myself.

For adults, of course, there is a multitude of websites on investing offering a variety of approaches. http://www.smartmoney.com offers all the latest headlines of the daily market and how various companies are faring. The site also offers tool for interested parties to set up their own online portfolio, track various stocks and funds each day as well as keep track of personal finances online. Though the sheer amount information available makes the site a bit unwieldy at first, there is a great deal here for those willing to wade through it.

Similar in execution is http://www.bankrate.com Though this site offers slightly less news about the daily market, it makes up for it with an abundance of online calculators for any financial quandary or question imaginable. Home equity calculators, investment calculators, auto calculators, mortgage calculators, cost of living calculators and more, this site gives you a chance to anticipate your future costs and earnings. With a very accessible and user-friendly layout, the site is easy to navigate and is ideal for anyone looking to organize their personal finances. The site also offers helpful advice columns for any questions or concerns you might have such as purchasing a second home versus a rental, debt and divorce, and changes in pension law just to name a few.

For direct focus on the market, http://money.cnn.com/ is the place to go. Run by CNN, the site offers the latest comprehensive news on the stock market and all the current rates. This site also offers the option of managing and organizing personal finances online through their website though a pop-up ad on the side of the site kept distracting me and made my experience at this site less enjoyable and shorter than it might have otherwise been.

For teenagers, young adults or just anyone who wants a refresher course in the basics of managing money well, the government hosts http://www.mymoney.gov/ Laid out in a simple user-friendly format, this site asks simply 'Do you want to learn how to save, invest and manage your money better?' Though I was at first dubious about the credibility of the site considering the source, I was quickly and pleasantly surprised as I began to navigate. The website offers all the basics of money management from knowing how to balance a checkbook to buying your first home, managing credit, starting a business, investing, paying for education for you or your children, and preparing for retirement. Each of the sections also offers a large amount of up-to-date and helpful links so that no matter what you wish to research, there is an abundance of information available. The site also had the distinct advantage of being completely advertisement and pop-up free which anyone who spends any time online can quickly appreciate. I found this one of the most informative and best designed of the online money websites and have bookmarked it to my personal favorites.

In a similar vein is http://www.smartaboutmoney.com, a website run by the non-profit foundation The National Endowment for Financial Education. The National Endowment for Financial Education introduces itself as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to helping all Americans acquire the information and gain the skills necessary to take control of their personal finances. They offer a variety of online courses and tutorials on money management ranging from checking to home buying to protecting yourself from identity theft. Courses are available for teens, adults, and the elderly. The site also has an online assessment quiz to give you an idea of where you are personally and a 'life tree', a graphically designed tree that makes it easy to review and plan for the various expenses at different stages of life.

For small business owners or those contemplating starting their own business,
http://sbinformation.about.com/od/creditloans/ focuses on money management for small business owners beginning with starting a business, securing loans, and finding investors. Those who already have a business underway can also benefit from the site as it gives plenty of tools and information for managing deflation, credit, and straightforward advice on to run a successful business of your own and avoid common pitfalls.

http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/index.php offers financial help for the whole family. A comprehensive site that has sections just for children, for teens, for adults and for small business owners. Educators and parents may also request free teaching materials. In addition to a vast amount of straightforward articles about money management, the site also offers a variety of games for learning to manage money such as Financial Football, Smart Money Quiz Show and Cash Puzzler just to name a few. This is one of the most comprehensive and easily navigated sites on the web. In addition to news articles, the site also offers many tutorials, personal budget planners, and free learning materials.

For those approaching retirement or already there, the AARP website http://www.aarp.org/money/revmort/ offers a site exclusively aimed at the financial concerns of retirees (and also includes the option to increase text size on the home page!) With an excellent graphic layout, the site is user-friendly and offers a wide array of articles on financial planning, social security, home mortgaging, credit and debt, how to choose a good lender, shop online safely, pros and cons of annuities, and more. Highly recommended for any senior approaching retirement.

And last but not least, for those who are interested primarily in investing and investing online, there is http://www.investingonline.org/. This site is aimed exclusively at investors and those who wish to invest online. For those just getting started it explores the things you need to know to safely invest online, how to find a good online broker, and the facts about after hours day trading plus numerous links to more information. It also offers a simulator to practice with so you can see what investing online is like and how it works.

These are just ten of the sites available out there, but no matter what your interests are, it's safe to say that somewhere on the web is a site with the information you need!

How to Recognize a Scam or Over Hyped Online Money Scheme

First off you should know that most of the online opportunities are scams, or at least over hyped. One of the first signs that should ring a bell is when you see an advertisement like “Make $10,000 a month working only a few hours a week!” It is a catchy phrase, and I mean, who wouldn’t want to make $10,000 a month? However, the reality of this scheme is quit the opposite.

There are several different types of businesses that offer this type of promise; a lot of them are Data Entry jobs. With Data Entry jobs you will pay for access to a site that provides a list of companies which give you affiliate links to their site. You then go and post ads trying to convince people to purchase things off of your affiliate link. If they do you will get a certain percentage of whatever that individual buys. While this type of business is not a scam, it is definitely over hyped. A lot of companies have you pay to get access to the website with the list of companies, but in all reality if you go directly to the company list site you can become a member for FREE! The reason you pay is because they also give you steps on how to post ads and what to type in those ads. However, they also spam you with e-mails and other money making opportunities to try and get you to buy! With all that said here is my take on the data entry jobs. You will not make a lot of money, and most of the information they provide is not worth the cost spent to pay for it!! The reason is because there are a lot of people who have bought into these schemes, which makes it hard to get someone to purchase anything from your affiliated links without putting a lot of money into Google, Yahoo, etc.

This was just one example of the many different types of online opportunities that do nothing more than waste your time and money. Other opportunities to watch out for include; envelope stuffing, toy building, medication selling, etc. The list goes on and on. So, I am sure you are now wondering if there is even a possibility of making money online. Well, there is!! But first let me give you some information on spotting possible scam/over hyped business opportunities. I have compiled a list to help:

1) Do plenty of research. Do not just read an ad and purchase right away.

2) Do a Who IS search on the website. The reason is that a lot of these sites are new and only register their domain for a year, which usually means they are not in this for the long haul, but rather to try and con people into purchasing a useless scheme. Also, check the person registered along with the address and phone number. Make sure you see nothing suspicious. However, a lot of people put in false information, so if you check an address or phone number and you can’t find it, more than likely the person put in false information.

3) Do Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see if the business is registered and what reputation it shows. Note: Not all websites will have a BBB record.

4) Do Find forums like scam.com to talk to others who might have already tried the program you are looking at.
Note: Be cautious of opportunities sent by e-mail, as most of them are scams!! Also, I recommend not doing anything that requires you to give out your personal information or requires you to transfer/accept money from a Wire Transfer!!

Hopefully this information will help you in determining which programs are real or not. Usually if a site promises to make you tons of money for just a little amount of your time they are just trying to get your money. Also, in my opinion, you shouldn’t have to pay someone to work for them!!! I know that if you start your own business you will have to fork out some cash to get it started, but if you are about to work for someone you shouldn’t have to pay them, because they should be paying you!! Also, a good saying to hold on too when searching for an online job is, “If it seems too good to be true then it probably is!”
Here is a list of jobs that I have known people to make money with. They are not rich but if you are looking to make a little extra money then, if done right, these will work.

1) Paid Surveys (However, do not PAY to complete the surveys, because there are plenty of free survey sites out there)

2) Writing Articles (Again, do not pay a site to write for them, because since you are working for them they should pay you)

3) Start a website or blog (If there is something you love to talk about then start up a website on it and then use Google ad sense to help bring money to your site)

These are just a few of the legit opportunities out there. Again, I highly recommend going to forums and talking to people who have already been in your shoes.
